Presented by Music Before 1800 In this vibrant program from the missions of Bolivia and Peru, Juilliard415 explores the intersections of global and local Baroque. In the mid-18th century, Jesuit missionaries brought Corelli, Vivaldi, Locatelli and others to their new missions in Chiquitos, in southeastern Bolivia. Versions of these pieces survive today in the archives of the Chiquitanía, alongside anonymous sonatas and motets, some in the indigenous languages of the region. The program traces the arrival of European religious music and its transformation inside the church, then turns to popular music outside the church with some of the surviving indigenous dances and songs of Peru from the Codex Martinez Compañón, along with folk-influenced songs by Juan de Araujo and Tomás de Torrejón.
